As an elementary art teacher at Joppa View, using student devices in my lessons has become very comfortable and seamless. However, it did not start that way! In my first year of teaching I was so lucky to be at a Lighthouse School and from the start my teaching has been impacted by our student technology. At Joppa View I was encouraged to use the devices in a meaningful way that worked for me. It took me while to be able to blend it into our lessons and units in a purposeful way. Not until my second year did I find a unit that let the devices fall into place perfectly! I have been teaching this stop motion unit every year since.

Art teachers have been teaching stop motion for a long time. The basic idea is nothing new. But in the past it was hard to find enough cameras for the images. Or enough devices to edit the video at the end. Realizing I had the perfect tool, our student devices, we dove right in. Students were placed into groups, with one device per group. We went over many stop motion inspirations, movies, examples, and technical information. They were given a theme and then were able to get started. They were able to create backdrops, characters, details, titles, etc., by using cut paper, and coloring materials.

Students were able to take the pictures on their group device, and had to set it up so that the whole scene would show up. Each group member had a job like camera operator, director etc. After many weeks of hard work, they were able to add music and edit the movie. They even added sound effects and title sequences.

All in all this was a rich learning experience where they used the device in a meaningful way. For the first time I understood how amazing this tool could be for my teaching, as long as I used it with purpose. The 1:1 device ratio has allowed me to be so creative with integrating tech into the art room.
