Today I will be explaining advantages and disadvantages from students in Chesapeake High School that they have noticed ever since Chesapeake High School has become a Lighthouse School. My partner Madison and I have interviewed a few students to see how they connect with the new technology and new information handed to us. Since they’ve been given devices, students are able to connect with their teachers more often if they needed help, while two years ago we had to wait until coach class or wait until the next school day to get the help we’ve been needing. That’s been a really big challenge for many of us because some students do not have the transportation to stay after school to be in contact with a teacher.
Another advantage is that they’re able to get sources from many places on the web to help with their school assignments. That’s a huge plus for many students because it expands their access to knowledge and I’ve personally experienced an incident where a student was able to research a topic and then brought that research into class and share with the group as a whole.

It can be frustrating, that many research sites are blocked that could be potentially helpful. But I see the advantage in that it prevents student’s access to inappropriate websites and websites that might lead to a distraction rather than extend learning.
Lastly, another advantage is that students will become more independent in accessing information. Since they have this technology, they can learn how to find the information they need on their own, which helps them explore more deeply the topic they are researching.

We interviewed a chemistry teacher, Dorothy Noble at Chesapeake High School, she likes to chunk assignments at different times so she’s able to monitor what students are doing during class time. It helps her become more organized since she uses the lesson tiles to upload her assignments and students can work from different locations if need be. This works well for absent students or for a student who may not have been able to get the teacher’s attention.

This technology has helped us learn even more than we could because we feel empowered to search information a teacher wasn’t able to give us at the moment or go deeper than what was shared in class.
